 Depression Treatment
Compare Best Ways To Treat Depression

Clinical depression is a severe medical disorder that usually occurs between the ages of twenty-five and forty-four. Children as young as five years old have been diagnosed with depression, and it has been seen for the first time in patients past the age of sixty. So you can see depression is an illness that can occur at any age. Research has shown serious depression is suffered by women twice a often as men. Depression treatment is a primary concern for anyone afflicted with this disease.

Depression is the kind of illness that sometimes is not recognized even though it is severe. Also,  there are times when depression treatment is not  properly evaluated. Over 2.5 million people are afflicted with depression at any one time, and the number seems to be rising. This could be due to better recognition and reporting of the disease. Another factor could be that some of the stigma associated with depression and other mental problems has decreased.

 Depression Treatment

The most common types of depression treatment include:

  • Psychotherapy - Psychotherapy is widely used in depression treatment. There are several forms of psychotherapy used to treat clinical depression, including behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, cognitive therapy and psychoanalysis. These forms of psychotherapy, with the exception of psychoanalysis, are fairly brief compared to what they were in the past.  The time frame most therapist today aim for in getting to the root of the problems causing the depression is four to six months.
  • Anti-depressant Medicine -  Tricyclics, monoamine oxidase inhibitors,  selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and lithium carbonates are the medicines most commonly used in depression treatment.  Each has its particular uses in depression treatment. Also, they have their own set of undesirable side effects. Drug therapy has had a profound effect on depression treatment. Many times antidepressant medication is combined with psychotherapy for the best depression treatment results.
  • Shock Therapy for depression treatment  has been used for a long time.  It has always been very controversial. However, it is the first and most reliable choice for patients with the most severe depression and who are suicidal.
  • Herbal Depression Treatment - herbal treatment of depression has fewer side effects and shows promise especially for long-term treatment. Some of the herbs used are St. John's Wort, Valerian Root,  5-HTP, SAM-e and Kava Kava.
  • Natural Depression Treatment - These treatments for depression include exercise, yoga, meditation, vitamins and diet factors.

In conclusion, although there is still stigma associated with clinical depression as well as many other mental illness, those who seek help do usually respond well to treatment. The form of depression treatment you choose should be discussed fully with your doctor.
