How To Stop A Sleep Problem

Coping with a sleep problem can be difficult, but most times there is a solution. The first thing most people think of when a problem sleeping arises is that taking a sleeping pill is the answer. But usually that is wrong because of side effects and the possibilities of addiction.

Your doctor will try to find out the cause of the sleep problem to determine any underlying causes. If there are not emotional or physical problems, sometimes small adjustments in sleeping habits can alleviate the sleep problem. Here are some points to consider:

  • Exercise regularly. Exercise can be a great help in alleviating any sleep difficulties. Exercise done at least two hours before retiring at night has been found to be helpful in inducing sleep.
  • Alcohol consumption. Alcohol might help you sleep better in the early hours of the night, but you tend to become restless as the night progresses. Chronic alcoholism is  known for causing serious sleep disruptions.
  • Caffeine and nicotine. These are stimulants that can cause a sleep problem if  taken during the evening hours. If caffeine does not prevent you from going to sleep, it can effect the quality of your sleep by disrupting your sleep cycles. Many over-the-counter pain, allergy and weight loss medications contain caffeine.
  • Maintain a regular sleep schedule. To avoid any kind of sleep problem, try to maintain a regular sleep schedule even on weekends to satisfy the needs of your own individual body clock.
  • Slow down each night before bedtime. It might be a good idea to avoid any sleep problem by having a quiet ritual before going to bed which could include a warm bath, listening to music or doing some gentle stretching or deep breathing exercises. Take a light snack if you want, but never have a large meal late at night.
  • Try not take problems to bed with you. Whenever possible explore solutions to problems before going to bed.
  • Create a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere. To avoid a sleep problem, make sure your bed is comfortable, the room is between 65 and 68 degrees and well ventilated.

If in spite of everything you have tried, you are still having a problem sleeping, go to an area outside of your bedroom to read or watch TV until you get drowsy.

If your sleep problem still persists, see your doctor who might be able to help you discover the cause. Restful sleep is important to health and well-being, so don't ignore any sleep problem you have.
